Ackworth School is so fortunate to have grounds in which thousands of trees flourish. In 2015, Andrew Ward, Head of Biology, led the establishment of our arboretum, curating a list of the 43 UK native trees, mapping them and, with our grounds team, planting the few species not represented in school.
Ten years on, we are producing a downloadable route map, replacing rotted wooden marker posts and adding QR codes to the posts that will link to a dedicated webpage for each tree species. If you would like to donate £250 to dedicate a tree in someone’s memory, this will help cover the cost of maintenance, mapping and, in some cases, replacing one of several species that have died in the intervening decade. We would also be grateful for additional donations towards the ongoing upkeep and mapping of the trees.
In the longer term, we will produce a sister guide to the Celebration Park, now also known as the Peace Garden, where many other trees were planted to celebrate the lives of individuals. This guide will include not only commemoration trees, but benches, plaques and buildings around the grounds that mark members of the Ackworth School community over 250 years.

Ackworth used to have a substantial orchard in Great Gardens. There are now six remaining apple trees. In Autumn 2025, we picked the apples for the first time in almost sixty years. Some went to the kitchens to make the apple crumble for Founders' Day. The majority were pressed, bottled and pasteurised to make 138 bottles of delicious juice (and we're not just saying that!). You can see more about the process here, including a video of our producer explaining the pressing process.
The bottles each have one of two fantastic labels, chosen as winners from a design competition for Coram pupils during Founders’ Day week.
Here you can pay for a bottle of apple juice for just £4 (though additional donations are, of course, welcome). The small profit will go towards the school's sustainability fund and supporting further pupil activities.
Rachel Belk will contact you on receipt of your order to arrange collection of your juice.
